The difference takes into account the prices observed on December 19, when zero VAT was still in force, and today, a month after the measure ended, according to information collected by Lusa.

Since mid-December and until today, most of the foods in the basket have increased in price, although some also cost less today.

Among the 43 foods whose price has increased are, for example, a 3-kilo bag of red potatoes (which now costs 21 cents more than in mid-December), a half-kilo package of spaghetti (four cents more), a package of rice (plus nine cents) or a kilo of onions (plus 24 cents).

Meat and fish

In general, the price of meat and fish has also risen, with chicken breast now costing 6.79 euros per kilo (compared to 6.09 euros in December). To buy a kilo of turkey legs, you now have to spend, respectively, 4.99 euros, whereas about a month and a half ago the cost was 3.49 euros and large fresh sea bream saw the price per kilo increase by one euro, to 7.99 euros.

Conversely, buying a kilo of pork steak today costs less than when zero VAT was still in force: 4.89 euros compared to 5.08 euros in December.

Eggs, preserves, butter, milk, yogurts, legumes also saw their prices increase, as did olive oil and cooking oil and some fruits and vegetables, such as bananas (imported and from Madeira), leeks or spinach.

But it is also in the fruit and vegetables category that the majority of the 10 food products whose prices fell in the aforementioned period are found.

In total, the basket with 54 foods whose comparative price was available in the two periods considered, today costs 180.9 euros, compared to 174.13 euros on December 19th.
