In an official note, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa congratulates King Carlos XVI Gustavo and considers that "the extension of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) to Sweden, which took place today, 7 March, represents a solid reinforcement of a structure that has been fundamental in matters of security and collective defense and maintenance of Peace".
"Portugal, which unreservedly, firmly and decisively supported Sweden's accession to NATO, welcomes this historic enlargement, in the firm certainty that the integration of its most recent member will contribute to strengthening the European pillar of defense within the Atlantic Alliance".
Sweden's accession to NATO, triggered by the Russian invasion of Ukraine and achieved after two years of intense negotiations, occurred today after Hungary – which placed the biggest obstacles – formally deposited the accession protocol in Washington.
