The National Republican Guard (GNR) will deploy 20 soldiers from the crew of the coastal patrol boat "Bojador", in two periods, between the 12th of this month and the 7th of August, in the operation "under the auspices of the European Border Guard Agency and Coastal Borders (FRONTEX) and within the scope of operational coordination at the European Union's external borders, to control migration flows and prevent cross-border crime", he said in a statement.
"The purpose of the mission is to prevent, detect, and put an end to illicit activities related to drug trafficking, human trafficking, weapons trafficking, illegal fishing, falsification of documents, identification, and registration of people, identification of facilitators, collection of information about networks criminal activities, search and rescue, combating maritime pollution and also contributing to the safeguarding of human lives at sea", he added.
Between 2007 and 2023, more than 1,100 GNR soldiers participated in several joint Frontex operations. "Within the scope of maritime surveillance and safeguarding human life, since 2007, the GNR has committed more than 450 military personnel on board vessels of different types, mostly in the Joint Operations INDALO in Spain, THEMIS in Italy, and POSEIDON in Greece", reads the statement.
