“I still can't give an exact membership number, but we clearly have a membership of over 90%", Manuel Leal, from the Union of Road and Urban Transport Workers of Portugal (STRUP), told Lusa, praising "all drivers and brakemen who since 10pm yesterday [Wednesday] have been joining in during these 24 hours of strike”.

According to the union leader, few buses and trams were running around 8:00 am compared to the normal service provided.

“We are going to have a plenary session, a gathering at Pontinha station at around 10:30 to discuss the situation and measures to be taken regarding the process of developing the struggle to achieve the demands”, he indicated.

Carris workers, drivers, and brakemen, are on a 24-hour strike today in protest at the administration's lack of response to demands for a real increase in wages and progress towards 35 hours of work per week.

The strike was initiated by network workers from dawn at 10pm on Wednesday, while for the remaining traffic workers, it began at 3am today.
