The Inquisition expelled many Jews. The son of an Abravanel became Consul of Portugal in Istanbul and saved many of those who fled Hitler and arrived in Turkey.

PEDRO CANTINHO PEREIRA was a teacher of Portuguese in France, with a master's degree in History in Strasbourg. He was the coordinator of Portuguese teaching at the Embassy in Paris. Since 1993 he has been a secondary school teacher in the Algarve. In 2002 he received his PhD in History from the Sorbonne, with equivalence from ISCTE. He is a teacher and director of the Library at ISMAT (Portimão). He is the author of books and articles such as The Shadow of War.

The book “A Portuguese Jew in Istanbul” shows the tenacity of a man with a high sense of humanity and how he awakened it in politicians and diplomats in Lisbon and Turkey.

The book will be presented on the 19 July at 6 pm at the Álvaro de Campos Library, in Tavira, by Jack Soifer, who appreciated it in columns published in Swedish and English.
