Representing an investment of €1 million, from the Environmental Fund, this initiative aims to “raise awareness among the population and the regional economy about the importance of efficient management of water resources, particularly in a context of increasing scarcity”.

The Portuguese Environment Agency (APA) and Águas do Algarve (AdA) will be responsible for implementing the actions provided for in the protocol established with the Environmental Fund, overseen by the Ministry of Environment and Energy, which will continue until 2025.

“Drought is an increasingly common occurrence in the Algarve and raising awareness among the population is essential to changing behaviours and ensuring efficient management of water resources. With this action plan, we are not only taking an important step towards a more sustainable future for the region but also promoting a culture of water and empowering communities to face the challenges of drought”, highlights Minister Maria da Graça Carvalho.

The planned actions range from awareness-raising campaigns in schools to the production of information materials for the population and the organisation of events.

According to this ministry, the objective is to “promote the adoption of more efficient practices in the use of water, both in the domestic and agricultural sectors”.
