The minister aims to execute several measures, including the introduction of shuttle buses and the switch to environmentally friendly vehicles like electric buses.
The Regional Government of the Azores has introduced a pioneering shuttle service to Lagoa do Fogo, free for residents, operational annually from June 15 to September 30. This initiative, which has already safely accommodated over 50,000 visitors, aligns with the region’s goals of sustainable tourism and environmental protection.
Berta Cabral, Regional Secretary for Tourism, Mobility, and Infrastructure, emphasised the need for decarbonising road transport, acknowledging the challenges of transitioning to sustainable vehicles like electric buses due to high initial investment and operational complexities. Despite this, the government remains committed to supporting this transition in partnership with the Environmental Fund.
The Azores have also implemented an Electric Mobility Plan, offering incentives and expanding a network of public charging stations for electric vehicles. Cabral highlighted ongoing efforts to facilitate this shift, including the electrification and renewal of bus fleets.
A comprehensive restructuring of the public transport system is also underway, addressing the issues posed by increasing tourism and ensuring public service remains uncompromised. Eight public tenders have been launched under updated legal frameworks, with São Miguel and Terceira’s complex systems remaining. These initiatives underscore the Azores’ dedication to sustainable mobility and adapting to evolving regional needs.
