On average, Portuguese went to the supermarket a total of 138 times during the last year. And each time they went there, they ended up taking more products home and also spending more money than was usual before the Covid-19 pandemic, according to market consultant Kantar.
The study entitled “Certainty in the midst of uncertainty”, which ECO has analysed, shows that, despite the indicators having dropped compared to the first year of the pandemic, shopping baskets are larger (10.3 kilograms per act vs. 10.1 in 2019) and more valuable, with an average spend of €22 on each purchase, €2 above the pre-pandemic level.
