The road safety campaign “At the wheel, the mobile phone can wait” is part of the 2022 National Inspection Plan and will run until May 30 across the country.
According to ANSR, last year, 24,306 violations were detected regarding the use of mobile phones while driving, which represents an increase of 5.5% compared to 2020.
In a joint statement, the ANSR, the PSP and the GNR stress that “it is urgent to stop this behaviour”, arguing that the use of a mobile phone while driving increases the probability of having an accident by four times.
The campaign “At the wheel, the mobile phone can wait” will integrate various awareness-raising actions carried out by the ANSR and inspection operations by the GNR and the PSP, with a special focus on roads with high road traffic.
You need highway patrol here like we have in Texas...Was with a buddy of mine driving from Braga to Oporto...Saw A Frito Lay Delivery driver weaving all over the highway looking at his telemovel...When we passed him I shot him the finger...Stateside you are fined heavy and or both go to Jail...You are too laxed in Portugal...Get Serious about the issue like you do Futbal...

Thank goodness at last! Seeing lorry, tractor and car drivers all using their phones as they drive along is frightening. Even when overtaking! Heavy fines hopefully, points on licences anything to make them STOP USING PHONES WHILST DRIVING.

Its is horrifying the number of people I see with a phone to their ears whilst driving.
I have actually been driven off the road a number of times by people using mobile phones driving well over the line as coming around a corner.
If lorry drivers and other HGV drivers are caught with a mobile phone to their ear, that should be a lifetime ban from driving.
Anyone else caught with phone to ear should be given the maximum number of points that can be recived before losing their licence, plus a fine.
This madness has to stop!!!
How many more people need to die before this issue is heavily clamped down on?
