Data sent to the Lusa agency by the PSP and GNR indicate that 42,495 road accidents have been recorded since the beginning of the year, which caused 135 deaths, 726 serious injuries and 12,211 minor injuries.

Compared to the same period in 2021, those two security forces recorded this year 10,259 more accidents (31.8%), 55 more fatalities (68.75%), 204 more serious injuries (39%) and 3,331 more light injuries (37.5%).

In a note sent to Lusa, the Guarda Nacional Republicana considers that the year 2021 “cannot be compared with the current year” due to the measures resulting from the Covid-19 pandemic and the consequent confinements and limitations of circulation, referring that there is greater rigor compared to 2019.

The GNR recorded, between January 1 and April 30 of this year, 22,784 accidents (6,028 more than in the same period in 2021), 111 deaths (56 more), 502 serious injuries (193 more) and 6,458 minor injuries (2,140 more).

Comparing the data with 2019, the GNR reports that in the first four months of this year there were 2,064 fewer accidents, 17 fewer deaths, 22 fewer serious injuries and 936 more minor injuries.

The districts with the most road accidents recorded this year in the area of ​​intervention of the GNR are Porto (3,564), Aveiro (2,275), Lisbon (2,275) and Braga (2,250), while the highest number of fatalities occurred in Setúbal, with 14 killed due to road accidents.
