The controversy around the stages of World Youth Day 2023, in Lisbon, is far from over, as according to Expresso, the President of the Republic spoke with the Auxiliary Bishop of Lisbon, with Carlos Moedas, president of the Lisbon City Council (CML) and with the Government, asking for a lower cost for the event.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, says Expresso, was "caught by surprise" by the cost of the stage-altar north of Parque das Nações, which will receive Pope Francis, and which will cost more than 5 million euros.

“Reducing a series of things and trying to lower the price” was the motto that also led the President of the Republic to advise the president of CML to speak with Mota-Engil, the company that took over the work by direct contract, in order to understand if it will be possible to reduce the costs of the work.

The mayor of Lisbon said this Thursday that he assumes "with great pleasure" the municipality's investments in the World Youth Day, reiterating the commitment to "invest up to 35 million euros", with the expectation of "an enormous return".

The World Youth Day, considered the biggest event of the Catholic Church, will take place this year in Lisbon, between the 1st and 6th of August, with around 1.5 million people expected at the event.
