This new hip restaurant, located on a main road in Albufeira, is a refreshing addition to the culinary scene. Owned by the same family as the renowned Mato a Vista, a traditional rural restaurant, Sal Maris offers a completely different concept curated by the youngest generation, Tiago Cordeiro.
The restaurant is situated on the Galé side of Albufeira, not far from the new W hotel, although I was surprised to discover that Albufeira is much larger than I initially thought. Mato a Vista, their previous establishment, is located at the top end of Albufeira and is known for its great food and wonderful wine shop.
Sal Maris, however, stands apart with its sleek and modern yet cosy ambiance. The building has undergone extensive remodeling, boasting a large terrace with an outdoor bar at the back. This attention to detail creates an inviting atmosphere where one can enjoy a leisurely sip of fine wine at the hip bar or indulge in a delightful dining experience on the terrace.
The menu at Sal Maris is extensive, offering a wide variety of fish, meat dishes, and three vegan options, ensuring there is something for everyone.
Maincourses are between 20-39 euro.
To start our meal, my son, Elyas, opts for a super nice fresh vegetable soup while I enjoy a pea soup with generous portions of asparagus.
The flavors are exquisite, and the quality is on par with Michelin-level cuisine. The attention to detail in both presentation and taste is truly impressive.
For our main course, we indulge in the green curry with fragrant basmati rice and the flavorful ratatouille. Both dishes are a harmonious blend of textures and spices, leaving us thoroughly satisfied. The culinary journey culminates with the arrival of the fantastic desserts, which prove to be the perfect ending to a remarkable meal.
The talented Chef João Simoes, who previously worked at the esteemed restaurant O Leão de Porches, leads the kitchen.
The very friendly team of Monteiro Silva is provide impeccable service, ensuring that every aspect of the dining experience is met with utmost care and attention.
In conclusion, Sal Maris Food & Wines in Albufeira comes highly recommended, whether you seek an evening of fine wines or a remarkable fine dining experience. With its inviting ambiance, extensive menu, and impeccable service, Sal Maris has successfully captured the essence of the type of establishment often found in Lisbon but lacking in Albufeira.
As a relative newcomer, having been open for only six months, Sal Maris has quickly established itself as a must-visit destination for those seeking refined culinary delights in a modern and trendy setting.

They can keep it, I'd not be paying €20-39 just for a main course. I can have a delicious 2/3 course lunch in central Portugal 2-4 times over with wine, bread, olives and cafe included for that amount. Some people insist on visiting these pretentious, overpriced joints. The best Alentejo pork I ever had was in a restaurant full of workmen/builders/tradespeople. So don't equate price with value, sometimes you're only paying for snob value.
