When talking about Portugal, the singer stated that "it is a phenomenal country, but more for those who visit it than for those who live there".
→ @salvador_sobral: "Portugal no es un país para los portugueses, es un país divertido para los turistas y la gente rica que compra casas."

"Unfortunately, nowadays, with the Government and the conditions, it is not a country for the Portuguese", he added, stressing that it is a "fun country for tourists and for the rich who buy houses".
He might just be right and that is rather sad..!

Right or not, First of, Portugal would be sinking in poverty without the foreigners. Next, nobody cares what this guy has to say about it.

The "haves" have been the target of the "have nots" since before the Roman days. The path to peace is to not lust over what you do not have.

If my theory of relativity is proven correct, Germany will claim me as a German and France will declare that I am a citizen of the world. Should my theory prove untrue, France will say that I am a German and Germany will declare that I am a Jew.

Maybe if the country insisted that it's anti corruption task force be adequately funded and deputized Portugal would magically flourish into prosperity for all, not just the ones who want to charge fellow countrymen exorbitant rent and sell off their homeland to the highest bidder. Change starts from within. If only that finger could point in the right direction.
By Daniela from Lisbon on 08 Oct 2023, 10:07
He is PARTIALLY correct. 1) it is NOT for the Portuguese, but 2) it is also NOT for the tourists and rich foreigners. Portuguese nationals need to look in the mirror (something they are loathe to do). It is standard to look outward and to blame the estrangeiros. PORTUGUESE Banks, politicians, propertied families AND the average citizen are ll trying to milk every dollar they can out of foreigners. They prefer to rent to foreigners, they offer loans to foreigners, they shut businesses that are centuries old in order to cater to tourists. Blaming golden visa users, Chinese investors, property and business shoppers is backward. THEY ARE HERE AT GOVERNMENT INVITATION to inject capital that portuguese WILL not, or in the average person who can't get a loan, will not only not invest but will 1) shrug and say "what can we do?" Then 2) "We have always done it like this" and finally 3) "it's the foreigners fault".

Yes Mart but sadly in the Algarve now, I sit in traffic breathing in the fumes, as opposed to the Atlantic air I did before.
Entire hills are disappearing, quarried away for building material and the concrete and glass boxes destroy the Algarve relentlessly. Whether you are a citizen or tourist, enjoy it before it’s gone!!

I'm from England and currently on holiday for a few weeks here in Portugal. I've hired a car, rented a self catering property and spent money in local shops and restaurants. Today, I was aggressively verbally attacked in a supermarket car park by a man whom I presume to be local for the crime of being a 'rich foreigner'. I've no idea where he got this idea ( my wife and are retired in our 60s, of modest means and appearance and driving a Fiat Panda!) . If this is typical of the feeling amongst local people, please tell me and we'll holiday elsewhere in future where maybe our custom might be more appreciated. As it is, my wife and I are very, very upset and frightened and thinking seriously about whether we will ever return. Maybe Portugal would prefer to ditch tourism entirely and pursue other industries?
By Anthony Bellworthy from UK on 08 Oct 2023, 17:12
Stop vilifying foreigners and blaming them for Portugal's woes.
Otherwise Portugal and the Portuguese will suffer the consequences. Other countries and regions have made this mistake. Portugal is heavily reliant on foreigners, their investment, and on tourism, and that is not going to change any time soon. Until it does, its time for the government take responsibility. It must reduce the tax burden, and provide a housing solution for the Portuguese and low paid workers.

Stop making every home an airbnb and tourists wont come. And get a job, then foreigners paying for your home with rent.

I agree after living here 7 years the house prices are rising too fast because more people are coming here and sadly the young Portuguese cannot afford to buy houses on their poor wages, even those with a good profession. Some people are making big money encouraging Americans to buy here too! I love living here and the Portuguese people are so kind but the government doesn't seem to care about it's own people. The health service is also collapsing like the UK too
By Sally from Other on 08 Oct 2023, 22:01
Portugal is a country for people with money, that is with more money than the average Portuguese will ever have. If one has money and is thus able to buy a home and a car then life is - so far - very good. This could change quickly when more and more people are living rough.
By Tom from Lisbon on 09 Oct 2023, 13:30
Portugal is great ! Portugal or Spain without tourists would be dull and poor.. let us be optimistic please! Portugal and Portuguese people will grow and will be better in a few years!! Long live Portugal and Europe !
By Pierre from Algarve on 09 Oct 2023, 15:01
He's absolutely right. Look at the rich and famous buying property/land here. George Clooney, Sharon Stone, Nicole Kidman all indicated in this paper spending millions. Of course none of their riches will help pay for affordable housing. Their places will be empty most of the time so used more as an investment or to hide from partying eyes.
By David Clark from Algarve on 10 Oct 2023, 06:27
There needs to be balance. Portuguese people deserve to benefit from the country’s recent popularity. Housing and employment are two key areas that people here deserve to benefit.
By Leonard Aron from Porto on 10 Oct 2023, 10:53
As an American tourist who has been captivated by this gorgeous country and it's welcoming people, I do have to agree. I look at the cost of housing and the wages that common people are making and it doesn't add up. We are experiencing the same in my country where the world's filthy rich are buying up properties and building ridiculous luxury homes and condos for themselves and friends. We've all allowed this to happen because
. well... who doesn't want to be rich!? The Portuguese government should do what it can to limit outside investment OR direct it to where it is beneficial for all of Portugal. I hope that the isolationist stance doesn't take over because that is a negative in the long run. Look out for yourselves and your neighbors always.
By Roberto from Lisbon on 10 Oct 2023, 11:02
I understand and must agree. Tourism is a major business here, but the employees aren't well paid. Workers at hotels, restaurants don't earn a lot of money as you might suppose and are even exploited. Our salaries in general are below 1000€ per month. Next year the minimum wage will be 820€, currently is 760€ and the cost of living is high. Banks are now charging more for the loans made to buy houses, this is having a very negative impact on families. Teachers and doctors have been striking a lot lately. We have many people unhappy and feeling negative towards their future.
By Carla from Porto on 11 Oct 2023, 01:12
All points of view expressed above are true: the government doesn’t address exorbitant taxes across all areas, Portuguese nationals have the tendency to be non-assertive, and foreigners can be at times, arrogant.
And here is my own pet peeve-if you’re so in love with Portugal, learn the language!
By Michele Silva from Lisbon on 11 Oct 2023, 08:24
He is right, the airspace is clogged with CO2-emitting aircraft. The avocado farmers are no longer allowed to spray while swimming pools and tourist showers waste water. The Portuguese have become the great victims of tourism.
