In Coimbra, farmers are in Avenida Fernão de Magalhães protesting for better conditions after the Government approved a plan of 400 million euros, to reduce the drought’s impact and reinforce CAP Strategic Plan, in Portugal.

The demonstrations in Coimbra started on 1 February, by 2 pm, with the farmers’ truck occupying Avenida Fernão de Magalhães, after coming from Montemor-o-Velho. The farmers parked their trucks on the street and went out to protest for their rights. The ones in the demonstration spent the night outside on the same avenue, being seen the smoke of some firewood, and also the smoke of barbecue, as farmers ate outside. It was also during the night that the farmers set off firecrackers during the night and prepared for the second demonstration.

This morning, the farmers started a “buzinão”, while honking with their trucks since 8 am. Currently, the farmers’ trucks are parked between the roundabout close to the Rede Expressos bus terminal and the Cindazunda roundabout in Avenida Fernão de Magalhães. The honks will make noise every hour, marking the presence of the 250 trucks that are present in the place.

Farmers, among other things, want to have the right to proper food, as well as fair conditions and the right valorisation of their professional activity.

Cars cannot circulate in that area, in both ways, access only being granted for emergency vehicles, while the police are in the place to organise the traffic.

To Lusa agency, Carlos Plácido, one of the responsible for the demonstration says that farmers will only leave the place when the authorities answer to their revindications. The Baixo Mondego farmers delivered to the Agriculture and Fishing General Directorate and will continue their protests until they have an answer.
