Lisbon City Council has announced that it will commemorate Luís de Camões' 500 birth anniversary, until 25 June.

The celebrations, which started on the 5 May - the World Portuguese Language Day -, will include themed routes, exhibitions, music, workshops, and photography. Moreover, a plaque on the poet's statue in Lisbon will be inaugurated on the 10 June, the Day of Portugal, Camões, and the Portuguese Communities.

According to the note, “The strategy for culture in the municipality reinforces its positioning in the area of ​​literature and books, with a program commemorating the birth of Luís de Camões that includes 12 initiatives that seek to highlight the poet’s connection to geography, history, memory and the identity of the city”. A bust of the poet and "an exhibition where several editions of 'Os Lusíadas' will be displayed, with emphasis on a copy of the 1898 work" will be on display at the Town Hall to kick off the festivities. Moreover, the municipal libraries will be organizing games and workshops for the whole family and a photography competition will also be conducted by the Municipal Photographic Archive.

The municipality highlights the "Lisboa de Camões" itinerary which will take place on 9, 16, and 23 May and 1 June and will be guided by Maria João Lopo de Carvalho. Plus, the exhibition "Evocation of the V Centenary of the birth of Luís de Camões" will be the highlight of the Camões Library starting on 6 June. It consists of 38 posters that emphasize significant aspects of the poet's life and work, as determined by Vasco Graça Moura and produced by the National Commission for the Commemorations of Portuguese Discoveries.

The final event of the commemorative programme is Susana Araújo's tour, "The Lisbon that Camões knew," which takes place on 18 June and 25 June. It follows the path through the city where the writing of "Os Lusíadas" got its start, between Praça Luís de Camões and the ‘Pátio do Tronco’. As the municipality notes, “Since history and language are essential, and long-lasting traits of our identity and memory, we cannot do without preserving and celebrating them, we could not let this date go unnoticed”.
