According to Executive Digest, the Port of Lisbon rose 99 positions in the international ranking of the most efficient container ports in 2023, according to the Global Container Port Performance Index (CPPI), recently released by the World Bank and S&P Global Market Intelligence.
The assessment, which covers 405 ports worldwide, with a minimum of 24 annual container ship calls, placed the Port of Lisbon in 121st position in the regional ranking of Europe and North Africa. This achievement represents a 45% improvement in the CPPI index compared to the previous year, consolidating its position as the most efficient national port.
In this ranking, the Port of Sines ranked in the 126th position, Leixões in the 292nd and Setúbal debuted in the ranking in 333rd position.
The Chairman of the Board of Directors of APL – Administração do Porto de Lisboa, Carlos Correia, highlighted that this rise is largely attributed to the recent investment of 140 million euros made by Yilport in the Alcântara Container Terminal. This investment has made it possible to increase the capacity of the ships operated at the terminal to more than 14,000 TEU and significant operational improvements, as well as a reduction in transportation costs in the logistics chain.
Globally, the Port of Lisbon also performed well, ranking 134th in the IPPC efficiency ranking, rising 82 places from the previous year.
This annual index is based on a massive dataset, including more than 182,000 ships and 381 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in 2023. The CPPI focuses on the length of stay of container ships in port, aiming to identify areas for improvement for the benefit of all actors in the global trading system.
