The festival's full program has been released and kicks off on July 1st with the opening of the exhibition that challenges artists to reinterpret iconic Jazz album covers.
This year the authors of the works, which will be on display until the end of July at Parque Basílio Teles, are Dino D'Santiago, Cláudia Guerreiro, Mariana A Miserável, Raquel Belli, and Francisco Fonseca.
The concerts begin on July 6th, at Jardim Basílio Teles, with Portuguese drummer Mário Costa, whose performance will be based on the album “Chromosome”, with which he won this year's PLAY Award for Best Jazz Album.
The following day, the French Nout Trio performs, bringing together flutist Delphine Joussein, harpist Rafaëlle Rinaudo and drummer Blanche Lafuente.
The concerts by multi-award-winning British producer, composer, publisher, and drummer Moses Boyd and “one of the most pertinent names on the UK jazz scene” saxophonist Jasmine Mira are scheduled for the 13th and 14th of July, respectively.
English-Nigerian singer Ego Ella May presents on July 20th at Matosinhos em Jazz “her musical journey inspired by R&B, neo-soul and contemporary jazz”. On July 21st, it is the turn of Portuguese musician Eduardo Cardinho's vibraphone and synthesizers to take over the festival stage.
On the last two days of the festival, July 25th and 26th, the shows move to Praça Guilhermina Suggia.
On July 25th, the Orquestra Jazz de Matosinhos takes the stage, with the North American trumpeter Nick Marchione, in a tribute to another North American trumpeter, Thad Jones.
On July 26th, the Orquestra Sinfónica Do Porto Casa Da Música performs with the Nigerian DJ Switch, in a show with musical direction by Taavi Oramo, “who leads an exercise in a symphonietta thought of as a computer code and contaminated by hip-hop, grime, and electro”.
Matosinhos em Jazz, an initiative of the Matosinhos City Council, has free entry and the shows take place at 6pm, with the exception of the 25th and 26th of July when they start at 10pm.
