In 2021, it said, the investment was €32.5 million, in 2022 €43.3 million, in 2023 €53.4 million and, by July 2024, the amount had reached €45.6 million.
The regional secretary for Tourism, Mobility and Infrastructure, Berta Cabral, said, quoted in a press release, that “currently the Regional Government's priority on roads is the Recovery and Resilience Plan (RRP), to promote increasingly better mobility for the Azoreans”.
According to the official, these are “structural roads that ensure better movement of residents on several islands in the Azores and promote the local economy”.
Berta Cabral believes that management, maintenance and investment in the regional road network “are essential to increase safety and reduce distances, travel times and congestion”. “With the investments we are currently making, including those included in the PRR, we intend to expand and improve road infrastructure in the Azores, improve accessibility to population centres and areas where economic activity is concentrated, as well as to the main entry infrastructures on each island”, she states.
