This second case also occurred at dawn on 31 July and
involved a small sailboat heading from the Algarve to Lisbon, with two men on
board, who were awakened by the noise of the impact. The rudder was bitten by
the orcas and the boat was eventually transported to a dry dock.
The other
vessel had been less fortunate and sank following its encounter with orcas
on the same night, leading to all five crew members needing to be rescued by
the Navy.
Why no reasons given by Pt scientists for these occurrences? Because when these big mammals enter previously non entered waters, it usually has to do with Humans encroaching them in their usual environment. So it seems it´s convenient to point out the encounters, but never explore the whys…too many people, namely tourists, sailing in our waters? Too embarrassing, the discussion of the real causes? It sure looks like it.
