The fisherman was the youngest of the crew and was found
inside the vessel, the captain of the port of Lagos told Lusa.
Speaking to Lusa, Pedro Palma said that the 23-year-old man
was the only one of the six crew members who did not go overboard and was found
still inside the vessel, "although he was not trapped", while the
other five managed to swim to the beach.
“What the remaining five crew members told us is that the
vessel capsized very quickly and that they only had time to throw themselves
into the sea”, said the official, adding that the victim was found at the
entrance to the vessel's cabin.
According to Pedro Palma, the causes of the shipwreck can
only be determined after expert opinion is carried out on the coastal fishing
vessel, which is 10 metres long, and which is still in the water, near Salema
beach.
At the time of the incident, there was no swell, nor
practically wind, so the hypothesis that the cause was bad weather “has been
ruled out”, he underlined, admitting that there may have been a problem with
the stability of the vessel.
The incident that caused the death of one of the six crew
members of a fishing vessel took place off Salema beach, in the municipality of
Vila do Bispo, in the district of Faro, and the alert was given at 03:30.
