As part of the International Day of Awareness on Food Loss
and Waste, the Movement says in a statement that in the rest of the world, the
values of food waste are “extremely worrying”.
Citing a study, the Movement says that if food waste were a
country, it would be among the richest 7%. “It is also estimated that in 2030
the economic impact of food waste will be 1.5 billion euros and, in
environmental terms, the study reveals that if food waste were a country, it
would be the 3rd largest emitter of greenhouse gases, with approximately 10% of
the total CO2 emissions in the world”, says the statement, adding that,
worldwide, the waste per household will be 75 kilos per year.
“While around 1,600,000 Portuguese live below the poverty
line – of which around 360,000 have food shortages – it is estimated that
1,000,000 tonnes of food are wasted every year – almost 100 kilograms for every
Portuguese”, says the United Against Waste Movement, which aims to raise
awareness of waste and the importance of changing behaviours.
Sad and Insane.

There´s very little that goes in the kitchen bin around here. An occasional spoiled grape, onion skins (the inedible ones, paper thin; not the crunchy outer layers of onion). The butt of the onion that tastes bitter whether eaten raw/cooked. Seeds, stem and just the white bits inside red bell peppers (bitter cooked or raw). No potato skins (I eat them with their skin). I eat the stems of the radishes, the roots of cilantro (very fragrant and nutritious if you get these herbs at a market-not the supermarket). Even for composting, my kitchen garbage is neglectable. So me thinks these 100kgs of waste a year per person- aren´t applicable to people who count their coins. Maybe Hotels, fancy Restaurants and Golf Resorts that throw fancy party events have 100 kgs or more of food to waste?? I mean, just the price they pay to eat at the event, all the people paying a small fortune, and then by comparison they raise a pittance for some local charity and feel really good about themselves. I´M PRETTY SURE I DIDN´T WASTE THAT OR CLOSE TO THAT IN THE LAST 4 YEARS.
