In a statement, the municipality in the district of Porto explains that the tourist tax will be charged per person for each overnight stay in hotel establishments, tourist villages, tourist apartments, residential tourism enterprises and tourism enterprises in rural areas.
According to the text, the charge will be made “up to a maximum of five consecutive nights, per person, per stay” and applies “to guests aged 14 years or over”.
“The fee generated is intended for public infrastructure and equipment, reinforcement of urban cleaning, the safety of people and goods, the public transport network and mobility conditions”.
However, there are exceptions to the charging of that fee: “Guests whose stay is motivated by medical treatments are exempt from payment, this exemption being extended to an accompanying person, disabled guests with a disability equal to or greater than 60% and guests who are housed in the aforementioned establishments, by express determination of public entities”, lists the municipality.
The City Council also states that “all tourist enterprises and local accommodation establishments are obliged to register” on the electronic platform, for the exclusive use of professionals in the sector, for the purposes of registration, settlement and delivery of the Municipal Tourist Tax.
It’s about time we charge a tourist tax! And it’s time to cut quotas as well. This country can’t take on more foreigners - rich or poor.

@Alan Weed, asking that others be prevented from taking advantage of the same opportunities you benefited from smacks of hypocrisy and pulling the drawbridge.
Luckily the Portuguese are a welcoming nation and appreciate the contribution that foreigners make to their country.
