A bakery and seven restaurants in Vendas Novas, in the district of Évora, will attempt to make the "world's largest bifana", measuring 15 metres long, on 7 September, the city council has revealed.
The initiative is being promoted by the municipality, in collaboration with the bakery and the seven bifana restaurants, and will take place at 7:30 pm on 7 September, the date on which the municipality of Vendas Novas celebrates its 62nd anniversary.
"The organising entities expect to make a bifana measuring 15 metres long, reaching a new milestone in the history of this gastronomic icon", said the local authority in a statement.
However, it stressed that "this feat is more than just a record attempt. It is a celebration of unity and the community spirit of Vendas Novas".
The attempt to make the "World's Largest Bifana", as part of the Municipal Festivities, will involve the Panificadora Central de Vendas Novas, which will provide a bread designed and prepared for the purpose by the company itself.
This bread, which will be made by three bakers, "will use around 50 kilos of flour", the council indicated.
The filling for this 'mega bifana' will be the responsibility of the establishments Bifanas & Companhia, Bifanas do Patrão, O Canto das Bifanas, A Chaminé, Mercado das Bifanas, Rulote O Menino de Ouro and O Silva.
"Each of the seven participating bifana restaurants will contribute with its own recipe", said the municipality, estimating that "a total of around 32 kilos of pork loin" will be used.
"This giant bifana will be the result of a truly collective effort, symbolising the strength of a community that unites around a shared goal: to consolidate Vendas Novas as the Capital of Bifana", highlighted the municipality.
According to the municipality, the public will be able to witness and taste this attempt to create the "world's largest bifana" for free, which will take place at the festival venue.
On the same day, among other events, the "King and Queen of Bifana" competition will also take place, in which the male and female participants who manage to "eat the most bifanas in 10 minutes" will be crowned, and a 'show cooking' session in which Chef Fábio Bernardino will reinterpret the traditional bifana from Vendas Novas.
The celebrations for the 62nd anniversary of the municipality of Vendas Novas will take place between the 6th and 8th of September, and will also include music, with Jorge Palma, Carlão and Ricardo Ribeiro as headliners, folklore, singing, dancing, DJs, walking, mountain biking, motorbike rides, sports classes, bull runs, taverns, crafts, local products and children's entertainment.
