The districts of Viseu, Porto, Vila Real, Viana do Castelo, Aveiro, Coimbra and Braga will be under a yellow warning between 09:00 on Wednesday and 00:00 on Thursday.

On Sunday, in a statement, the IPMA indicated that the situation is due to the “transport of a mass of tropical air, with a very high water vapour content, in the joint circulation of an anticyclone located south of the Azores and a depression region in the North Atlantic”.

According to the IPMA, periods of persistent rain are expected from Tuesday onwards in the North and Centre regions and will sometimes be heavy on Wednesday and Thursday, especially on the coast north of Cabo Mondego and mountainous regions.

In the south, rainfall will generally be light, although unlikely in the interior of Baixo Alentejo and Sotavento Algarve, and may be temporarily moderate during the morning of Thursday.

“The accumulated rainfall values over the three days in question could reach between 100 and 200 mm [millimetres] in Minho, Douro Litoral and the mountains of the districts of Viseu, Aveiro and Coimbra, and between 50 and 100 mm on the rest of the coast north of Cabo Mondego, with most of the rainfall concentrated between the mornings of Wednesday and Thursday”, according to the IPMA.
